If they are looking toward external options to consider in free agency, they could eye three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.
“The Yankees were also in contact with Merrifield after the Philadelphia Phillies cut him in July. Merrifield landed with the Atlanta Braves, posting a 93 OPS+ in 42 games. He turns 36 later this month,” Kuty wrote.
Merrifield can play both second and third base, which would be helpful even though Jazz Chisholm can do the same.
The Yankees currently have Oswald Peraza, DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Carbrera battling it out for the whichever infield spot the team doesn’t put Chisholm at during spring training.
Relying on Peraza and LeMahieu, who both struggled in 2024, would be a massive risk while Cabrera is best suited for a utility role rather than being an everyday player.
Merrifield could be an option for the Yankees to consider if he can give the offense some league-average production from one of the infield spots, especially if it’s closer to what he gave the Braves toward the end of last season.
