Why Harry Amass was not in the Manchester United squad vs Man City

Erik ten Hag omitted Harry Amass from the Manchester United squad against Manchester City as he prioritised senior players.

United did not have a single defender on their bench for the Community Shield and Facundo Pellistri was sent on at right back, where he was culpable for Bernardo Silva’s 89th-minute equaliser.

Amass, 17, started in all three of United’s pre-season tour games and seemed a certainty to make his official debut against City but he was the only outfield player from the travelling squad cut from the matchday 20.

Ten Hag played Lisandro Martinez, a centre back by trade, at left back in the absence of injured senior left backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Full back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, bound for West Ham, was also not in the squad.
