Romelu Lukaku is reportedly on his way to Napoli with the Italian side having agreed to a deal to end Chelsea’s miserable second partnership with the Belgian. Naturally, a striker who will expect to start in Naples gives plenty of hope to supporters, many Arsenal fans in particular, that Victor Osimhen might therefore be prized away.
Having previously discussed the evidence surrounding Osimhen and how he statistically compares to the likes of Kai Havertz, it is probably best not to cover old ground. However, what instead is better to do here is look at the current situation with the team and the window as it stands.
The striker position is fourth on my list of priorities and seemingly for Arsenal it lies relatively far down theirs. Only Benjamin Sesko presented as a tempting enough profile to show some keen interest in signing the player prior to his decision to remain with RB Leipzig and sign a new deal.
There is good reason to that with Havertz’s form last season being a key one. Gabriel Jesus looks unlikely to leave and Leandro Trossard has performed very well centrally and is appreciated within the club for his goals in big moments, cementing his place in Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Central midfield is certainly where I think greater focus should be as the club need to reinforce the options in the middle, in particular with that of a box-to-box type player.
The issue Arsenal have is that there is a lack of standout candidates here at this point in the summer. It could be that opportunities emerge later which the club will explore and there is also little sign that Thomas Partey will be leaving too.
Then comes the wide area where Bukayo Saka is in desperate need of competition, rotation and cover. Arsenal need to find a way of better managing Saka’s minutes as injuries were beginning to creep more frequently into his season compared to what has gone before.
