With that said Adams only wanted to be on the Jets because of Rodgers. At 32 years old, Adams is running out of time and it’s likely he’ll force his way out if Rodgers leaves. In a recent interview, when asked if Adams would play for Mike Tomlin, he said, “100 PERCENT… I’ve had nothing but respect for him and it’s been mutual”. Playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers would be a great place for Adams to finish his career.
As the off-season comes closer, it seems more and more likely Rodgers won’t return to the Jets. According to uSTADIUM, “the Jets are expected to move on from both Rodgers and Davante Adams this offseason. The relationship between Rodgers and owner Woody Johnson is said to be “irreparable.” Assuming Rodgers ends up leaving the Jets, Adams will likely request a trade.
After going 5-12, the Jets are in no position to contend either. It would be a much better decision for them to just take what they can get for a 32-year-old receiver and start rebuilding.
Joining the Pittsburgh Steelers
Adams carries a heavy contract of $35.6 million in 2025, which will turn some teams away from him. With that said, the Steelers are in desperate need of another receiver besides George Pickens and should be willing to take this on. The team simply can’t go another season with Calvin Austin as their WR2.
When being traded to the Jets, Adams went for a third-round pick, and I would expect him to be around the same value next year. It would make a ton of sense for the Steelers to give up the 85th overall pick to acquire Adams.
After making the playoffs and getting bounced right away, I don’t think the Steelers are close to being Super Bowl contenders. What I will say is that acquiring Adams should help them at least return to the playoffs in 2024. While a lot of their 2025 season will depend on the quarterback position, acquiring Adams will help out the offense a ton and give them a chance to make a deeper playoff push in 2025
