Arsenal have earmarked Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams as their primary target to reinforce their attacking lineup this summer. However, the Gunners must navigate through several significant hurdles to secure the young star’s signature.
Williams, 21, saw his burgeoning reputation skyrocket during Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, where he capped off a stellar tournament by scoring in the final against England. The buzz surrounding his future has been intense, with numerous clubs showing interest even before the Euros. As teams return to pre-season training, Williams is keen on a swift resolution to his transfer saga.
Initially, Arsenal aimed to sign a new centre forward to enhance their attacking options. However, after missing out on Benjamin Sesko, who chose to stay at RB Leipzig, and finding Alexander Isak unattainable, the focus shifted to acquiring a versatile wide forward.
Williams’ ability to play on both flanks is particularly appealing to Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, who needs a player to provide competition and cover for Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
Williams has a €58 million release clause in his contract, making him an affordable option in the market. However, the fee must be paid in full upfront to trigger the clause. Having spent significantly in the past two summer windows, Arsenal are adopting a more cautious approach this time and will likely need to sell one of their current attacking players to fund the purchase.
Fulham have already seen a substantial bid for Emile Smith Rowe rejected but are expected to return with an improved offer closer to Arsenal’s £40 million asking price. Even with an augmented transfer budget, securing Williams’ signature will not be straightforward due to the competition.
Williams prefers to stay in Spain, with Barcelona keen on pairing him with international teammate Lamine Yamal. Barcelona’s chief, Joan Laporta, recently stated, “Today Barca could cope financially with a signing like Nico Williams.” However, this remark reportedly frustrated several Barcelona players who are yet to be registered for La Liga due to various contract issues.
In addition to Arsenal, several Premier League clubs, notably Chelsea, are pursuing Williams. The Blues have already made significant progress in exploring a deal for the winger, despite having a squad filled with attacking talents
