The first half of the 2024-25 season was not easy for FC Barcelona on the injury front, as the Blaugranes saw several important players miss significant game time due to physical issues.

Things have improved lately, with the returns of Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Ronald Araújo, etc., and as things stand, the only two players who still remain unavailable due to long-term injuries are Marc Bernal and Marc-André ter Stegen.

The goalkeeper suffered a torn patellar tendon at the end of September and was expected to remain on the sidelines for around 8-9 months, thus missing the rest of the season.

However, according to SPORT, the German is intending to return to play before the season ends, and with the way his recovery is going, hopes of him achieving this objective are getting higher.

The report mentions that the Barcelona captain’s recovery four months after his injury is going significantly more positively than was previously expected. In fact, he is already training on the ground, and also on the pitch at times.

In the press conference ahead of the game against Sevilla, Hansi Flick also talked about his situation and revealed that Ter Stegen has already started working with the goalkeeping coach, De la Fuente.

The German has already told the coaching staff to expect him to be available in the month of May, when there will still be five La Liga games left to play and another two potential games in the UEFA Champions League, the second leg of the semi-final and the final.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are more cautious than the goalie himself, and it remains to be seen whether Hansi Flick will risk taking him to the pitch in this crucial phase of the season after Ter Stegen has missed almost the entire season.

Gabriel Martinelli has sent a clear message following reports a hamstring injury will keep him out of action until March at the earliest. The Brazilian went down clutching the back of his leg during the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle with Ethan Nwaneri swiftly coming on in his place.

“Yes, he felt something,” Mikel Arteta said on Martinelli in his press conference after the game. “I think it was his hamstring and he wasn’t comfortable to continue so we’ll have to do an MRI scan tomorrow to see the extent of the injury.” The Athletic then revealed a few days later that he faces more than a month out of action due to injury.

Mikel Arteta had already lost Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka to long-term injuries this season and the blow for Martinelli means he will have just three fit senior attackers at his disposal. While Nwaneri is certainly part of his first-team plans, the Hale End graduate is still only 17.

Despite the fact the club were firmly aware of the challenges Arteta was facing in attack, no new signings were brought in during the January transfer window. Attempts were made to sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins but that deal was not sanctioned while interest in Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel never really went beyond that.

Arsenal have an interest in signing Diogo Jota from Liverpool, it has been claimed. The 28-year-old, who joined the Reds from Wolves for £45million from Wolves in September 2020, could leave this summer with Arne Slot said to be growing frustrated over his damning injury record.

Jota has missed a staggering 95 matches due to injuries during his four-and-a-half years at Anfield. 16 of them have come this season, with the Portugal international not able to stay fit and enjoy a consistent run in the side.

When available, Jota is Liverpool’s best centre forward but there is a concern that he is missing too many matches, having started just 11 across all competitions this season. Anfield Watch reports the Reds are considering allowing Jota to depart Merseyside in the summer with Arsenal keen on signing the front man.

While there is a reluctance to sell to a rival club, Jota is believed to be available for the ‘right fee’, the report claims. There are also said to be suitors from abroad keeping an eye on his situation. The report further adds that Arsenal were interested in Jota last summer and could come back in with Mikel Arteta’s side crying out for another attacker to strengthen their squad.

Jota has scored eight goals and added two assists in 20 appearances this season. He has netted three of them as a substitute, having last found the net against Nottingham Forest last month. Now back in the fold after a short spell out, Jota could start Liverpool’s trip to Plymouth in the FA Cup on Sunday.

He made his return to action as a late substitute during Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Tottenham on Friday. The ex-Porto and Atletico Madrid marksman replaced Darwin Nunez in the 72nd minute and helped the Reds ease through to the Carabao Cup final. Myles Lewis-Skelly is reportedly being closely monitored by new England manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of the March international break.

The Three Lions will play Albania and Latvia in their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign next month, and according to Fabrizio Romano, ‘internal discussions’ have taken place about a potential call-up for the youngster. Given the amount of action he has missed, it is very possible Arteta is managing his load with the defender perhaps joining Saka indoors. It is however, plausible that a minor setback has been suffered with several players experiencing that upon returning from long-term injuries.
