Nico Williams ‘confirms’ final Arsenal transfer decision amid £49m issue

Arsenal target Nico Williams has hinted he could now be staying at Athletic Club after admitting he is looking forward to the 2024/25 season. The 22-year-old returned to pre-season training on Tuesday after being granted an extended break following Spain’s success at Euro 2024 earlier this summer.

Williams impressed at the tournament, scoring the opening goal in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the final last month. His performances across the Euros saw interest increase, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona emerging as the favourites to sign him this summer. However, his reported £48.7million release clause – which is required to be paid up front – has proven to be a sticking point for interested parties.

Now, it does seem likely that Williams will stay at Athletic unless someone can stump up their asking price. Williams, who scored eight goals and added 19 assists in 37 matches for Athletic last season, has now returned to training and it looks as if he plans to stay at the Basque club ahead for the new campaign.

Speaking on Athletic club channels, Williams said: “I’m back! I’m really looking forward to this season. Vamos, Athletic!”. Williams has three years left on his contract and Athletic are in no pressure to sell.
