Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard believes that “the sky is the limit” for Bukayo Saka after the young star delivered a stellar performance in the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Wolves on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
Saka, 22, played a crucial role in Arsenal’s triumph, assisting Kai Havertz for the opening goal before securing the win with a powerful strike in the second half. The England international, who finished last season as Arsenal’s top scorer, appears poised for another remarkable campaign as the Gunners aim to end their Premier League title drought, which dates back to 2004.
Manager Mikel Arteta, impressed by Saka’s form, even likened the winger to Lionel Messi in his post-match comments. Adding to the high praise, Odegaard expressed his admiration for Saka, highlighting the limitless potential of his teammate.
“There is no roof for this guy,” Odegaard said. “It is unbelievable the quality that he has, how professional he is, how much he loves the game, and how much he puts into it every day. The sky is the limit for Bukayo. I’m just happy to have him on my team, and we need to help him improve all the time and push him. I’m really happy for him.”
Odegaard also emphasised that Saka’s dedication and work ethic will only lead to further improvement. “I think Bukayo will just get better and better,” he continued. “You see him every day in training, working hard on all the small details to improve. I’m sure he’s just going to keep getting better. I can’t wait to see where he takes it.”
Saka’s impressive performance against Wolves is even more remarkable given that just 34 days prior, he started for England in the Euro 2024 final. Fellow Arsenal teammate Declan Rice, who also started in the final, and goalkeeper David Raya, who was on the bench for Spain, were standout performers in the Gunners’ hard-fought victory at the Emirates on Saturday.
Reflecting on their commitment, Arteta remarked, “I’m not surprised by their performances. Their mentality was clear immediately after the last game—they wanted to be ready for the first game. They were eager to come back early, and if players are showing that level of commitment, it will spread throughout the team and elevate the level.”
Arsenal will look to build on their strong start as they travel to face Aston Villa next Saturday, hoping to secure their second win of the season.
