Apple Intelligence’s notification summary feature continues to face scrutiny and criticism after a slew of glaring errors including on Luke Littler and Rafael Nadal, were highlighted in multiple recent reports.
The artificial intelligence-powered feature has been criticised for headline errors, inaccurate summaries, and outlandish information. In the most recent example, before English darts player Luke Littler had even participated in the PDC World Championship final, an Apple Intelligence-powered summary erroneously stated that he had won, according to reports. Some users were reportedly also misinform
Apple had released the AI summary feature as part of iOS 18.2, aiming to give users a concise synopsis of notifications rather than the entire content. The feature, which is in beta, intends to improve user experience.
However, recent errors indicate that Apple Intelligence might require more work before it can be trusted with providing accurate information in its AI summaries. According to reports, Apple has admitted the possibility of mistakes and encouraged users to report any inaccuracies so that the system may be made better.
The recent inaccuracies aren’t the first for the AI feature. In December, Apple had come under fire after this feature claimed that Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of killing a healthcare insurance CEO in New York, had shot himself. Mangione was, on the contrary, still under maximum security detention at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
The accuracy of the news summary function was called into question after it was confirmed that details of the well-known murder case were erroneously released by the AI-generated summary.
International media organisation Reporters Without Borders had even called on Apple to turn off the notification feature, referring to erroneous summaries as a threat to accurate information that readers have the right to.
