Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is facing a challenge in convincing the club’s hierarchy to approve the signing of Riccardo Calafiori, as reported by The Athletic. Arteta has identified the 22-year-old Italian left-footed defender as a top priority.
Despite a cautious start to the transfer window, the Gunners are now accelerating their plans. Calafiori, who showcased his talent at Euro 2024 with Italy, is on the verge of joining Arsenal. However, the deal remains in limbo as Arteta works to persuade the club’s decision-makers to commit the necessary funds.
A proposed £42 million deal is under discussion, but negotiations with Bologna continue. Arsenal is wary of overpaying, especially since Bologna is looking to maximise the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause owed to Calafiori’s former club, Basel.
Despite the financial haggling, Calafiori is eager to move to North London. Personal terms have reportedly been agreed upon, with the defender set to sign a five-year contract worth £3.8 million annually, a significant increase from his current salary at Bologna.
The Athletic journalist David Ornstein revealed that Calafiori’s price is considered above his market value. On The Athletic FC Podcast, Ornstein noted that many industry insiders believe the £42 million price tag is inflated.
“I think they’re asking for around €50 million (£42 million), which many people within the game feel is significantly above his market value,” Ornstein stated. “They suggest it has been inflated by his decent performance for Italy at the Euros, and there’s another complication that Basel are due maybe 40-50% of any future transfer.”
Calafiori’s ability to address multiple defensive needs makes him an ideal acquisition for Arsenal. He is expected to be the starting left-back while also providing cover at centre-back, offering crucial flexibility and depth to the squad. This versatility is vital, especially given the defensive issues Arsenal faced during William Saliba’s injury towards the end of the 2022/23 season.
By securing Calafiori, Arsenal aim to bolster their defence, providing quality cover for Gabriel Magalhaes and solidifying the left-back position. His arrival is set to enhance Arsenal’s defensive options, ensuring they have the depth needed to handle injuries and suspensions effectively.
