James McClean has labeled Declan Rice as “very overrated,” dismissing the widespread acclaim the Arsenal midfielder has received from the English media. McClean, now playing for Wrexham in League One, voiced his opinions while on punditry duty for RTE.
Rice, 25, had an impressive season last year, becoming one of the standout signings in the Premier League. His contributions were pivotal as Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal pushed Manchester City to the final day of the campaign. However, McClean remains unconvinced by the midfielder’s abilities. He believes Rice does not match the standards of players like Rodri and the recently retired Toni Kroos. “I think Declan Rice is very overrated,” McClean said.
He’s a very good footballer, but the way the English media praise him is completely over the top. For me, he’s not world-class. World-class means getting into every single side in the world, and I don’t think he does that.”
McClean elaborated on his views, arguing that Rice lacks the ability to dictate play as effectively as other top midfielders. “He’s not someone who is going to get on the half turn and play passes forward. He’s very good at what he does, seeing danger and putting out fires, but the hype around him is unjustified.”
Neville commented on England’s recent 1-0 victory over Serbia, highlighting the limitations of Rice’s current role. “What we’re doing is asking him to sit there in midfield and sweep up. He’s not a Rodri or a Busquets. That is not Declan Rice, and Mikel Arteta has worked that out this season,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
