Hugh Freeze Hails New Auburn WR Transfer as a ‘Home Run’ Addition
Auburn football is hungry for a comeback. After struggling to find consistent success since 2020, the Tigers are hoping that their new leadership under head coach Hugh Freeze will lead to a complete turnaround by 2025. Under previous coach Bryan Harsin, Auburn posted its last winning record in 2020. Since then, they’ve faced challenges, particularly on offense. Freeze, however, has been busy retooling the squad, and his recent comments reveal that Auburn’s offense might be poised for a breakout season. While much of the focus has been on the addition of former five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma, it’s another transfer that Freeze believes will be a true game-changer for the Tigers.
During a media session on Monday, Hugh Freeze was quick to praise Wake Forest transfer wide receiver Horatio Fields, calling him a “home run” acquisition. Freeze highlighted Fields’ ability to dominate in 50/50 ball situations and described him as a “standout” during the offseason workouts. The 6’3″ wideout, who had a quiet start to his college career with just three receptions over his first three seasons, truly broke out in his final year at Wake Forest. In 2023, Fields caught 39 passes for 463 yards and four touchdowns, finishing second on his team in both receptions and yards and leading in receiving touchdowns. His strong performance caught the eye of Freeze, who envisions him forming a dynamic duo with Auburn’s other tall and talented receiver, Cam Coleman.
Like Fields, Coleman stands 6’3″ and showed flashes of brilliance last season, racking up 37 catches for 598 yards and eight touchdowns despite the team’s struggles on offense. Together, Fields and Coleman could give Auburn one of the most dangerous receiving tandems in the SEC. They will be joined by speedy playmakers Malcolm Simmons and Eric Singleton Jr., who combined for 96 receptions last season. If the offense clicks, much will depend on the development of Jackson Arnold, who faced his own struggles at Oklahoma. Despite some early benchings in 2024, Arnold finished strong with 1,421 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and three rushing scores.
With all these new pieces coming together, Auburn’s offense has the potential to finally make the leap from underachiever to contender. With Fields in the mix, Hugh Freeze’s Tigers might be ready to prove they’re back in business.
