Galatasaray manager rules out summer move for Barcelona midfielder

Following Galatasaray’s Turkish Super Lig triumph, reports emerged claiming that they will target some big signings in the summer transfer window.

And, it was suggested that one of the club president’s main targets for next season was Barcelona veteran midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

Reports claimed that the former Manchester City captain was the dream target for Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek.

Gundogan will continue at Barcelona, says Galatasaray manager

However, now, Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has pretty much ruled out a move for Gundogan, stating that the midfielder will continue at Barcelona next season.

“Gundogan will stay at Barcelona,” Buruk said, as quoted by AS.

“Every coach wants to have him in his squad, but I know that Ilkay will continue his career at Barcelona for another year.”

Praising the veteran midfielder, the Galatasaray manager added: “He is a very high-level player in terms of personality and character, but it is certain that he will stay there for another year.”

Important role

Gundogan, 33, joined Barça only last summer and has established himself as an integral figure in the team.

One of the most-used players by Xavi during the 2023/24 season, the Germany captain finished with five goals and 14 assists from 51 appearances in all competitions.

With Hansi Flick taking over the reins now, the veteran midfielder is expected to become even more important.

After all, the pair worked together during Flick’s reign as the German national team manager between 2021 and 2023. Having been unable to taste much success under him at the international level, Gundogan will be motivated to achieve glory at Barcelona.
