The Philadelphia Flyers fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. After the loss to Toronto Sunday night, the Flyers were looking for a win; however, despite the close game, the result didn’t go Philadelphia’s way.
Ivan Fedotov started in the net again after his decent performance on Sunday. Not even five minutes into the contest, Joel Farabee punched Connor Dewar, boosting Philadelphia’s energy. There were a lot of close-scoring opportunities, as Ryan Poehling’s shot went off the goal post. However, Travis Konencny was able to capitalize on the aggressive tone the Flyers were playing under, giving the orange and black a 1-0 lead.
It wasn’t until five minutes left in the first frame that the Maple Leafs had their first shot on goal, which Fedotov saved. With Philadelphia’s aggressiveness, the momentum shift went to Toronto’s side for the start of the second period.
Cam York was sent to the penalty box for a two-minute high-sticking minor. This allowed the Leafs to show off their power play. Former captain of the Leafs, John Tavares, tied up the game 1-1. Both teams had to play four-on-four hockey as the penalties from Mitch Marner and Tyson Foerster overlapped.
With seconds left before Toronto’s advantage, Travis Konency scored his second goal. Noah Cates’ aggressiveness in getting back possession of the puck from Toronto made for a weird pass to TK, which he could get past Joseph Woll in the net. This is now Konency’s 20th goal of the season at the halfway point of the season.
In the final frame, Matthew Knies was the Leafs’ goal scorer; however, the final goal resulted from an aggressive Maple Leafs team putting pressure on the Flyers’ defensive zone. Despite Philadlephia’s attempt to tie up the contest this time, they fell short. Most notable was Matvei Michkov’s passing to Owen Tippett, who ended up missing on an open net. Toronto won 3-2 in regulation.
Following the game, John Tortorella spoke for less than a minute. He stated, “We played a good game.” He wasn’t going into any more detail than that. He briefly commented on the goalie situation, “I don’t know what’s going to happen with the goaltending rotation.” There was not much from the head coach, but it was a two-goal game for Konency, a good job by Fedotov on the net, and a reasonable team effort.
