Standard Sport gave Saka a 6/10, commenting, “Came alive during the outstanding counter-attack which led to the equaliser, beating Cucurella and squaring to Bellingham. But that moment aside, he was quiet, 6/10.”
The Express echoed these sentiments, stating, “Started brightly against Cucurella but England were so starved of possession that they couldn’t get him on the ball enough, 6/10.”
The Guardian was slightly more generous, awarding Saka a 7/10 and noting, “His speed belatedly terrified Spain and his cross got England back in the game. Good early on too.”
Sky Sports provided a comprehensive assessment, remarking on Saka’s consistent ability to excite fans. “England’s joy offensively came down Saka’s side in tandem with Walker. Always capable of making things happen and the one player who has regularly got fans off their seats in Germany. Others retreated into their shell and wilted under the weight of expectation and while Saka kept asking questions, this was largely a quiet night, 6/10.”
Despite the mixed reviews, there is no suggestion that Saka let England down. His excellent performances throughout the season and the tournament have earned him a well-deserved rest, even if the overall outcome was disappointing for the team.
