Arsenal’s perfect Bukayo Saka back-up signing reminds Mikel Arteta why a deal must be done

Arsenal have been sent a reminder of Kingsley Coman’s quality after previous links to the club.

Last night, the Frenchman got on the scoresheet – assisted by Michael Olise – in Bayern Munich’s 4-0 win over ULM in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Previously, the former Paris Saint-Germain winger had been linked with a move to the Emirates.

Now 28, this is a crucial period in his career – however Arsenal tend to target young players who can grow and adapt to Mikel Arteta ’s style – Riccardo Calafiori is 22 and will likely fit the Gunners transfer policy of bringing in young players for a long-term solution.

Coman would be a short-term solution rather than a player who could spend a prolonged period in north London. The Gunners boast quality in the left-wing position; Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are the likely starters this season – although with four competitions to compete for, there is still a place for an addition if the deal makes sense.

One criticism of Arsenal in recent years has been the lack of silverware – Arteta boasts a single trophy with a FA Cup victory over Chelsea in 2020. The France international certainly knows a thing or two about capturing silverware, he sports an impressive collection including several Ligue 1, and Serie A triumphs with a sublime eight Bundesliga titles to his name.

Despite his links to the Premier League, Coman has also been touted with a move to Barcelona, earlier this week journalist Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “Barca have started discussing wingers internally as there’s still no breakthrough in Nico Williams deal. Kingsley Coman can leave Bayern on initial loan, he’s among options on the shortlist.”
