Arsenal are still facing a number of huge transfer decisions ahead of the 2024/25 season commencing and the summer window closing. The Gunners have already welcomed David Raya, Tommy Setford and Riccardo Calafiori on permanent deals with Mikel Merino likely to join that list.
The Real Sociedad midfielder emerged as a target after Mikel Arteta and Edu tweaked their transfer plan with Emile Smith Rowe’s departure also playing a role. An admiration in Merino has been present for the last few months and now Arsenal are finally formalising their interest with talks advancing.
Bruno Guimaraes was one option that fit into the previous category of what the Gunners were looking for. Though the priority has changed, Arsenal are still fans of the Brazil international with Manchester City showing a strong interest.
Sealing exits will also be important for Arteta, with any deal for Merino potentially hinging on that. Despite Marseille’s final striker decision, Eddie Nketiah is the most likely departure with Bournemouth adding him to their Dominic Solanke replacement shortlist.
Aaron Ramsdale could also be moved on, though the Gunners have already rejected a loan proposal from Ajax with a permanent exit the club’s preference which would result in Joan Garcia coming in as his replacement.
