Arsenal are adopting a patient approach in their pursuit of a new centre-forward following Kai Havertz’s impressive performances in the 2023-24 season.
Initially targeting RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as their top summer acquisition, the Gunners’ plans changed after the 21-year-old forward committed his future to the German club by signing a new contract last week.
According to Football Insider, this development has prompted Arsenal to reassess their transfer strategy, with club officials emphasising that they will not rush into a panic buy.
Havertz, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea last summer, was originally deployed in a midfield role by manager Mikel Arteta. However, as the season progressed and Arsenal’s title ambitions intensified, the German international transitioned into the striker position, where he thrived. Havertz repaid Arteta’s faith by scoring a series of pivotal goals, cementing his role as a key player in the squad.
In his debut season at the Emirates, Havertz made 51 appearances, starting 43 times, and contributed 14 goals and seven assists. His performance has convinced Arsenal’s recruitment team that an immediate addition to the forward line is not essential, especially with Gabriel Jesus also available to provide a significant impact.
Havertz’s prowess extends to the international stage, where he recently scored from the penalty spot in Germany’s 5-1 victory over Scotland in a group stage match on June 14.
While Eddie Nketiah remains another striking option for Arsenal, he has attracted interest early in the transfer window, suggesting potential moves.
Despite this, Arsenal have reportedly shifted their focus and are preparing to bid for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Italian outlet Area Napoli indicates that an offer for the Nigerian international is imminent, although it is expected to be below his £102 million release clause.
Napoli, preferring to negotiate with PSG and Saudi Pro League clubs ready to meet the higher valuation, may face competition from Osimhen’s preference for a Premier League move, positioning Arsenal as a likely destination.
