Arsenal handed new Viktor Gyokeres transfer twist as Man United agreement reached

Ruben Amorim’s proposed switch to Manchester United could have a major effect on Arsenal’s move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres. United are looking to appoint Amorim as their replacement for Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was sacked following a poor start to the season.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Amorim has agreed in principle to become the next United manager, with a compensation package now being settled on between the two clubs. Should Amorim take over, speculation will be centred around transfer targets and he could bring some of his set-to-be former Sporting players to United.

One of those that might be temped to reunite with Amorim is Sweden international Gyokeres, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal. The 26-year-old has 43 goals in 50 appearances for Sporting last season and already has 14 in 14 games across all competitions this term.

The striker, who signed for Sporting in 2023 from Coventry, is reported to have a €100million (£83.4million) release clause in his contract. Although United might find it hard to push for such a fee, Amorim and Gyokeres could reunite at Old Trafford if the chance becomes available.

United acquiring Amorim could prove to be a blow in Arsenal’s pursuit of Gyokeres, but Mikel Arteta’s side are still in on a much more positive trajectory at the moment and a move to the Gunners does seem a little more appealing. Arsenal sit third in the Premier League right now behind Liverpool and Manchester City.
