Across Arsenal’s three pre-season games there has been one player who has excelled – and perhaps one many supporters did not expect to be the standout candidate: Reiss Nelson. While Ethan Nwaneri had a couple of fantastic cameos and Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz enjoyed two good displays, only Nelson managed to impress in all three games.
The Hale End graduate is being heavily linked with a move away from the club, with both Leicester City and West Ham considered interested parties – although the latter has since secured a forward signing. Emile Smith Rowe will be sold while Eddie Nketiah is also in discussions over an exit but of the three Nelson appears the one perhaps who can offer Mikel Arteta the most going forward.
Arsenal are lacking depth in wide positions, particularly on the right-hand side. Nelson started in Bukayo Saka’s typical role against Liverpool, with Martinelli making his first start of pre-season. Nelson was again incisive and possessed a burst of speed, providing Arsenal with perhaps their best chance that was not taken when he cut the ball back to Gabriel Jesus, who should have scored.
Despite his impressive showings, there remain question marks and when Saka does return Nelson’s minutes are almost certain to diminish considerably again. A move has been seen as the best thing for his career, and few would blame him for seeking an exit considering the lack of obvious minutes.
