In a significant development, Arsenal are poised to secure the signing of Riccardo Calafiori, with the player reportedly rejecting Chelsea in favour of the Gunners.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio confirmed to Sky Sports News that while Arsenal and Bologna have yet to finalise the transfer, the deal is expected to be completed soon.
“Arsenal is a bit below the asking price, but I think they will do the deal,” Di Marzio stated, emphasising Calafiori’s strong preference for Arsenal. “He wants Arsenal. In his mind, it is only Arsenal. Even Chelsea tried to get him, but the player said he wants Arsenal.”
Negotiations between Arsenal and Bologna have been ongoing, with Bologna demanding an improved offer. The current proposal from Arsenal stands at €40 million (£33.6 million) plus €10 million (£8.4 million) in bonuses and a sell-on clause, while Bologna are holding out for €50 million (£42 million) plus bonuses and a sell-on.
Despite the gap in valuations, Calafiori’s agent is working diligently to bridge the differences. Arsenal aim to finalise the deal this week, ahead of the team’s departure to the United States on July 21st. Personal terms have already been agreed upon, with Calafiori set to sign a contract until 2029. Basel is set to receive 50% of the profit Bologna makes from the transfer due to a sell-on clause.
Calafiori, a versatile left-footed defender, made 37 appearances for Bologna in the 2023/24 season and represented Italy at Euro 2024. The 22-year-old can play both as a center-back and a left-back, making him a valuable addition to the Arsenal squad.
If the deal goes through, Calafiori will become Arsenal’s third or fourth signing of the summer. The club has already secured 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucas Nygaard and signed David Raya from Brentford on a permanent deal. Additionally, a fee has been agreed upon for Tommy Setford.
