North London rivals, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are set to fight for a popular EURO2024 star this summer.
The European Championships, which kicked off just under two weeks ago, has provided a pedestal for Europe’s unconsidered stars to cement themselves in elite club’s summer transfer plans.
One man who has impressed fans and pundits alike is Bologna and Italian centre-back, Riccardo Calafiori
After spending multiple years at Roma, where the youngster struggled to gain a starting spot, the 22 year-old then made a move north of Italy to Switzerland’s FC Basel, where he found regular playing time.
His current side, Bologna, then secured his signature for €4.00million last summer, and their gamble has paid off terrifically.
Last term, Calafiori featured in 33 matches in all club competitions and scored two goals, registered five assists as well as an impressive 17 clean-sheets. He was also a fundamental part in the club’s success of achieving UEFA Champions League football for the first time in their history.
This summer, the defender has partnered Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni at the heart of Gli Azzurri’s defence. Although Calafiori was a victim of a cruel own-goal against Spain in a 1-0 loss, the Rome-born player’s 98th minute assist against Croatia to ensure Italy saw guaranteed progression made up for his previous error.
However, Premier League giants, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have joined the pursuit for the versatile defender’s signature.
According to Tuttosport, the North London rivals have been keeping tabs on Calafiori, and are both weighing up a transfer which would see him move to England this summer.
If the red half of North London come out victorious in their approach, the Gunners could be willing to offer Juventus one of their transfer targets in Jakub Kiwior.
Calafiori can play comfortably as both a left centre-back and a left-back, making him a valuable candidate for Arsenal’s defensive needs. With their back-line stable, potentially barring the left-back spot, Calafiori could push for a starting role, whilst also being the rotational cover that the North London club desire.
