Emile Heskey has suggested that Arsenal stand no chance of signing Alexander Isak this month – and that Newcastle’s potential Champions League qualification could be a decisive factor.
The former Liverpool forward highlighted Isak’s impressive goal-scoring form, with the Magpies’ striker netting 14 goals in his last 15 appearances. That includes a streak of scoring in seven consecutive Premier League matches and finding the net in Newcastle’s recent 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.
Heskey pointed out the unlikelihood of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe selling his star player to a direct rival like Arsenal. Speaking to Instant Casino, he said: “I think Arsenal fans are living in dreamland if they think that they can sign Alexander Isak in January. The thing is, Newcastle are legitimately chasing top four.
“I think it would take stupid money, crazy money to get Isak out of Newcastle in January. Even if they want him in the summer, you’re talking over £100million. Will they try for him in the summer? Maybe, but who’s to say he wouldn’t want to stay at Newcastle, especially if they can secure Champions League football,” reports the Mirror.
The ex-England star has questioned whether there might be a “gentlemen’s agreement” between Alexander Isak and Newcastle, which could see the striker leave if the club doesn’t secure Champions League football. “If Newcastle do qualify for the Champions League, I can’t see them selling any of their best players,” he said.
