Mikel Arteta unlocks the ‘next Lionel Messi’ as Arsenal given £30m transfer green light

Arsenal only have less than two weeks to wrap up any final business before transfer window shuts. The Gunners have already welcomed a few new faces to the Emirates Stadium this summer, tying David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori down to long-term deals.

Last summer, Arsenal spent over £200m on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber. Having invested heavily in his midfield and defence, Mikel Arteta may finally sign a forward – especially with Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson facing uncertain futures.

Arsenal urged to sign Isak

Paul Merson believes Arsenal would win the Premier League if they signed Alexander Isak. The 24-year-old striker was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium before joining Newcastle United from Real Sociedad a few years ago.

Arsenal given Merino green light

When faced by the Spanish press on Saturday, the Real Sociedad manager revealed that Mikel Merino won’t be named in the matchday squad for their clash against Rayo Vallecano – the opening weekend of the new La Liga season. Imanol Alguacil also confirmed that the 28-year-old midfielder is currently engaged in ‘open negotiations’.

“Mikel Merino is not in the squad because I decided so,” he said. “He was ready to help the team. We will see if he will be with us next week or not. There are open negotiations.”

Arteta, meanwhile, remained coy when asked about a potential deal for Merino on Friday. The Arsenal boss said: “You know that I cannot talk about any other players.”

Arteta compares Saka to Messi!

Mikel Arteta compared Bukayo Saka to Lionel Messi following Arsenal’s win over Wolves. The 22-year-old winger doubled the Gunners’ lead with a tremendous strike after cutting inside onto his left-foot.
