Arsenal have been interested in Mikel Merino for a while but Edu has so far failed to reach an agreement with Real Sociedad for the midfielder. The 28-year-old has less than one year remaining on his contract at the La Liga side and could be available for around £25million.
Any potential deal was made more complicated by Merino’s involvement at Euro 2024 with Spain, however. Luis de la Fuente’s side beat England 2-1 in the final on July 14 and Merino only returned to pre-season training with Sociedad on Monday.
After enjoying some much needed time abroad, Merino was pictured at Sociedad’s training ground embracing his teammates. After the midfielder completed some fitness drills with Sociedad’s coaching staff, he was soon back out on the grass and showcasing his ability.
In fact, one moment of brilliance from Sociedad’s session on Wednesday was shared on Instagram. During a training session, a ball was swung into the box and headed down to Merino, who stepped forward to hit the ball on the half volley into the roof of the net. The left-foot strike was sublime and perhaps highlights the midfielder’s goalscoring ability to Mikel Arteta and Edu.
