Leny Yoro’s injury setback could force Manchester United to reconsider their approach in their pursuit of Matthijs de Ligt.
The £59million recruit from Lille was forced off in the first half of United’s 2-1 defeat by Arsenal in Los Angeles on Saturday. Although the club has not revealed the extent of the problem, early indications are concerning.
The 18-year-old was seen using crutches and wearing a protective boot on his left foot at UCLA, United’s training base in LA. If Yoro is sidelined for an extended period, as is feared, it would be a significant blow for Erik ten Hag, who had intended to feature the French youngster prominently in his revamped defence.
Ten Hag also has other defensive concerns, with Lisandro Martinez yet to return to training following his Copa America triumph with Argentina. The Premier League’s opening match against Fulham on August 16 might arrive too soon for him.
