Manchester United will have to confront Ineos’ unwanted decision in the next few weeks

When Bruno Fernandes returns to Carrington in the next few days he will do so with questions over his Manchester United future not too far from the surface.

The club captain will make a low-key return to training but when the club’s executives return from the United States next week there will come a point when talks will surely take place to determine where every party goes from here. There is no expectation that Fernandes will leave United this summer, but his future became a talking point in the final weeks of last season.

Bayern Munich were keen on signing the Portugal international and while he insisted he was committed to the club he has represented with distinction for the last four and a half years, his answers on his future were a little vague.

First, when pressed on the subject after the final home game of the season against Newcastle, Fernandes said his future was dependent on what the club wanted to do, at a time when high-profile sales were being considered to raise funds.
