Arsenal wait on £35m deal to ‘proceed’ on move for dream next transfer

Arsenal are reportedly prepared to “advance talks” to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino once Emile Smith Rowe completes a permanent move away from Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with a move for Merino of late, though are not the only club to have shown an interest on securing the services of the former Newcastle United man.

Barcelona had been mentioned as a possible destination, though a recent report from Spain has indicated the Spanish giants are no longer pursuing a deal due to being unable to sell Frenkie de Jong this summer after the Dutchman sustained an injury blow.

A fresh update on Merino from Fabrizio Romano has explained he is “appreciated” by Mikel Arteta and that the Gunners have enjoyed “positive contact” with the player’s camp. it is added a deal is likely to progress once Smith Rowe has left Arsenal.
