Arsenal are moving closer to completing their second signing of the summer as Riccardo Calafiori edges closer to sealing his dream move to the Emirates Stadium.
He would follow David Raya through the doors after the goalkeeper made his loan move from Premier League rivals Brentford permanent. Attention is now turning to the other gaps in Mikel Arteta’s squad – with midfield one of the areas in need of improvement to help Arsenal’s title charge.
Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino appears to be the frontrunner for the role, although other targets are thought to be under consideration. Departures will be needed to help balance the books and boost the transfer budget, though, with Eddie Nketiah one of the players set to leave.
Merino’s stance on Arsenal move
Arsenal appear to have become the frontrunners for Mikel Merino.
Merino, 28, is a player the Gunners are monitoring as they are interested in signing a central midfielder this summer. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are also said to be interested in the Real Sociedad player, but returning to the Premier League is believed to be his preference.
