Ilkay Gundogan is being tipped for a different role at Barcelona next season under new coach Hansi Flick.
The Germany captain, who has been starring at Euro 2024, will be used as a playmaker next season under his compatriot, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The newspaper speculates that Flick with play with two pivots and a playmaker and wants Gundogan further forward and in a similar role to the one he plays for Germany.
Gundogan will complete with Pedri and Fermin Lopez for the position, while Flick will use Frenkie de Jong, Christensen, Gavi and Marc Casado for the two pivot roles.
The club are also still hoping to bring in another midfielder for that pivot position, but it’s not known yet if that will be possible due to the club’s financial situation.
MD add that Flick is eager for more intensity to his Barca team, wants his players to “press tirelessly” and wants to “raise the level” at the club.
He has plenty of midfield options already but is also confident there “will be minutes for everyone” due to the sheer number of fixtures the team will play next season.
The report follows on from recent comments by Pep Guardiola who said Gundogan’s best position is “as a number ten, behind the center forward” and feels he “can easily score between ten and fifteen goals per season.”
