With Barcelona failing to win any trophies last summer, there was not much to write home about for the Catalans on a collective level.
However, certain individuals affirmed their talent and worth to the team, making solid cases for their continuity ahead of next season.
One of those players was Ilkay Gundogan. The German maestro arrived as a free agent last summer and defied all expectations in his debut season.
Gundogan filled in many roles in midfield and was mostly played deeper in the first half of the season, yet he still notched an impressive 19 goals and assists.
Gundogan will fulfil his contract
Recently, reports surfaced claiming that Galatasaray were eyeing Gundogan as a possible reinforcement this summer.
Even so, according to MARCA, Gundogan has no intention of departing from Barça this summer.
He is committed to remaining with the club until at least 2025, which is when his current contract is set to expire.
The 33-year-old joined for two seasons, through to 30 June 2025, with the option to stay an additional year. The club also attached a buyout clause of €400 million.
Given Gundogan’s familiarity with Hansi Flick, having previously collaborated with him on the German national team, he will be enthusiastic about the opportunity to work under his guidance once again.
In fact, reports have even argued that Flick values Gundogan’s experience considerably and that he will rise in prominence under him.
Galatasaray manager confirms Gundogan’s continuity
Dispelling Gundogan’s links with the Turkish giants, Okan Buruk, the club’s manager, also ruled out a move for the midfield veteran this summer
“Every coach wants to have him in his squad, but I know that Ilkay will continue his career at Barcelona for another year,” he said.
