Cameren Fleming Enters Transfer Portal After Versatile Stint with Virginia Tech
The Virginia Tech Hokies are taking another hit to their roster this spring, as redshirt sophomore Cameren Fleming has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. A versatile defender who wore multiple hats during his two seasons in Blacksburg, Fleming is now looking for a fresh start and a chance to make an impact elsewhere.
Fleming, a 6-foot, 202-pound athlete out of Richmond, Virginia, came to Tech as a three-star safety recruit from Trinity Episcopal School in the Class of 2023. His arrival brought promise, and the coaching staff explored that potential by experimenting with him in a variety of roles across the back seven. During his time with the Hokies, he was tested at cornerback, safety, the hybrid “star” linebacker spot, and inside linebacker—showcasing both his adaptability and football IQ.
Despite the positional shuffling, Fleming saw limited action over two years, appearing in just four games and logging a total of 11 defensive snaps, all coming last fall. It was during that brief stint at Stanford that he recorded both of his career tackles. Still, the lack of consistent playing time may have played a role in his decision to seek new opportunities.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Fleming offers potential suitors a player with size, flexibility, and untapped upside. His departure adds to a growing list of Hokies entering the portal this spring. He becomes the seventh Virginia Tech player to make the move, joining quarterback Davi Belfort, offensive linemen Caleb Nitta and Web Davidson, defensive lineman Jorden McDonald, linebacker Jayden McDonald, and defensive back Braylon Johnson.
The spring transfer portal window remains open until Friday, meaning there could be more roster changes on the horizon for head coach Brent Pry and his staff. As Virginia Tech looks to retool and build momentum heading into the summer, every departure adds urgency to fill gaps—particularly on defense, where Fleming’s departure adds to an already thinning unit.
While his time in maroon and orange was brief, Fleming leaves behind the legacy of a player willing to do whatever was asked. Now, he’ll hope to find a new program ready to give him a defined role—and a bigger opportunity to shine.
