Megan Duffy Makes Big Move, Secures First Transfer Portal Commit with Purdue Guard

Thursday marked a significant milestone for Megan Duffy as she celebrated her first full year as the head coach at Virginia Tech, taking over from Kenny Brooks. In her debut season, Duffy navigated a challenging year with a small roster, finishing with a respectable 19-13 record. While the team fell just short of making the NCAA Tournament—becoming the first team left out of the 68-team field—they showed tremendous resilience. The Hokies went on to play in the WBIT, where they reached the second round before being knocked out by Texas Tech.

Since that tough defeat, Virginia Tech has seen some changes. Three players entered the transfer portal, with Lani White’s departure being the most notable. Despite these losses, Duffy still has a few scholarships to work with, and she made a major move on Thursday to bolster her roster for the upcoming season.

In a significant step forward, Duffy secured her first transfer portal commitment of this cycle with the addition of Purdue guard Sophie Swanson. A sophomore for the Boilermakers, Swanson averaged 8.9 points per game this past season, playing in 28 games and averaging nearly 20 minutes on the court. The Illinois native showed marked improvement from her freshman year, making her a valuable asset for Duffy and the Hokies.

Swanson’s commitment is a promising sign for Virginia Tech’s future, as it adds depth and experience to an already talented roster. With her scoring ability and solid contributions to Purdue’s offense, Swanson is expected to be a key player for Duffy as she continues to build a competitive team at Virginia Tech.

For Duffy, landing Swanson is a major win in the transfer portal and a positive way to close out her first year in Blacksburg. As she looks to strengthen her squad further in the coming months, this is just the beginning of what could be an exciting new chapter for the Hokies.
