In a recent report, Sport stated that Red Bull Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons, who is currently playing on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, is dreaming of a move to Barcelona this summer. It has been claimed that the Catalan club would face competition from Bayern Munich and Arsenal in the race to sign the Dutch attacker.
Simons’ Decent Numbers In German Football
The 21-year-old is enjoying a productive loan spell at the Red Bull Arena as he has managed to put in a run of influential displays for the German club in the final third. Simons has scored nine times and picked up 15 assists in 42 appearances for RB Leipzig this season across all fronts.
The Dutch attacker has given a good account of himself in the opponent’s half by averaging 2.6 shots, 2.5 key passes and 2.7 dribbles per game in Bundesliga. He has even distributed the ball accurately in the final third, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 82.1% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Paris Saint-Germain will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for Barcelona to get a deal done for him on the cheap later this year.
Should Barcelona Bring Xavi Simons Back To The Nou Camp?
Simons can shoot the ball with power and precision from long range and has got the vision to engineer a few inviting chances for his teammates on the offensive end of the field. He can make a few dangerous runs with the ball as well in and around the opposition penalty area.
The Dutch talent deserves a ton of credit for scoring and creating his fair share of goals for Leipzig this season. However, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would need time to prove his worth in Spain.
Simons knows the Catalan club well from his time as a youth player at the Nou Camp. Hence, it makes sense for Barca boss Xavi to try and bring him back to Spain when the transfer window commences at the end of this campaign.
At 21, the future looks quite bright for Simons. However, he is still on a long-term contract at his parent club Paris Saint-Germain. Therefore, Barca would struggle to fund a move to land him this summer.
