Cowboys coaching rumors tracker
Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Monday that Eagles OC Kellen Moore is expected to be “deeply into the mix” for Dallas’ head coaching job, while former Cowboys TE Jason Witten is also a realistic option for the team. Harris added that former Raiders head coach Jon Gruden “can’t be ruled out.”
Moore has close connections with the Cowboys, as he’s spent time with the franchise as a backup quarterback, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Dallas cannot interview him until the Eagles’ season ends, though.
Witten does not have any NFL coaching experience after he retired as a Cowboy in 2021. However, he is currently the head football coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas.
The implications of Dallas’ lengthy McCarthy decision
As Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz noted on Monday, because the Cowboys waited so long to make their decision on McCarthy, they missed a key time frame to interview some premiere head coaching candidates. While the NFC’s first-seeded Lions were on bye, teams could request interviews with Detroit’s coveted coordinators, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.
Now, the Cowboys will have to wait until the end of the Lions season if they want to interview either Johnson or Glenn. The same goes for other teams’ coordinators, like if Dallas wants to pursue Bills OC Joe Brady or Eagles OC Kellen Moore. There haven’t been any official indications on who Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are interested in, but by waiting to part ways with McCarthy, things got a little more difficult.

Dallas is officially parting ways with McCarthy as his free agency approaches. There haven’t yet been official indications of who the team could target as its next head coach, but there are numerous potential candidates on the market, including both of the Lions’ coordinators, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.
