Sydney were 3-0 up inside the opening half hour against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday when striker Wood spurned a glorious opportunity from point blank range. The 21-year-old looked set to pounce on goalkeeper Danny Vukovic’s poor touch but he somehow missed the tap-in when it seemed easier to score.
Sydney went onto win the match 3-1, lifting them up to sixth in the A-League. While Wood’s howler did not prove costly for his side, it is hard to remember a worse miss in recent history. The youngster, who has scored 14 goals in 70 games for Sydney, was subbed off in the 61st minute of the contest.
Forward Wood, who has been capped seven times by Australia’s under-23 side, is likely to feature in Sydney’s next game at home to Adelaide United next Saturday, followed by hosting Melbourne City a week later.
